From Mr. Underwood's Coding class: "We were working on learning the problem solving process. Students designed and made an aluminum foil boat. They then tested to see how many keys their boats held. After that, students reflected on their designs and attempted to improve upon them."

From Miss Treuner: "2nd grade sure does love learning about plant parts and what those plants need to grow!"

From Mrs. Flandermeyer:
"The 8th grade English classes are currently working on a unit about rites of passage. We began by reading a short story titled "Red Roses" in which a young girl experiences an event that marks an important stage in her life. The students then partnered up to brainstorm milestones that many people experience throughout their lives and then created a timeline of the milestones. The students then did a quick write describing a rite of passage that has held the most significance for themselves or someone they know well."

From Mrs. Lamar: "This week we learned about germs--how to keep them from spreading and getting us sick. Today, we made a craft of ourselves using a tissue to cover our cough and/or sneezes. They turned out absolutely adorable!"😍

From Mrs. White: "LA II students read a line from a song or play today and then had to choose who sang or wrote the line. There were 3 choices to choose from, and they had to move to the correct corner of the room with the sign for their particular choice. We talked about how song lyrics contain multiple literary elements, including rhyme. We also discussed second guessing ourselves and how to use context clues to help identify unknown information. It was fun to watch students really discuss and provide reasons for their choices. They also learned that just because the majority chose an option, that option was not always correct!"

From Mrs. Dove:
"Mrs. Piscopo’s Kindergarteners are learning about book care. After reading about it, we went into the STEAM Lab and using old book pages that were going to be thrown away, we wrote on the page with a pencil and marker, cut, bent and tore the page and finally added water to it with an eye dropper. After that, Mrs. Dove asked them to put the page back together. 😳 They realized that they couldn’t do it. Now, they know why you should take good care of our library books and especially keep our water bottles away from them. What a fun experiment!!"

From Mrs. Hilt:
"Third grade is using counters to make arrays. We use arrays to solve multiplication problems."

From Mrs. Piscopo:
"Mrs. Piscopo's class was so excited to see a playground visitor!"

I like to start my science classes out each year with a STEM challenge. It's a great way for me to observe group dynamics, problem-solving skills, leadership skills and communication abilities - all while doing science and engineering! It's also a great reminder for students that sometimes the best things are created by failing, reconfiguring and trying again.
